Adding a quarter lemon adds a bit more zest to the base flavor of this recipe, but personally I prefer slow cooking this recipe for at least an hour in my favorite Le Creuset on low/medium heat without any additions to the ingredients below. After trying a few variations, I feel like this is the best mulled apple cider because the fresh ginger adds a little something special the longer its warmed with the other spices.
I've also enjoyed leaving this recipe in my slow cooker for 4+ hours while hosting parties - this is a fun way to set up a hot apple cider bar, complete with whipped cream, cinnamon dusting, caramel, cups and straws without having to keep an eye on the stove. I usually start this on high setting and then switch to warm setting when guests arrive.
If you're pressed for time the instant pot is a great option to get this up to a boil fast and pressure cook for about 15 minutes, then switch to the "keep warm" setting.
